A Dark Future for Gamification?

Gamification can be a powerful tool, but also a locus of debate. Is it the perfect way to help us become better versions of ourselves, making beneficial but uninteresting tasks more engaging? Or is the gamification carrot not as healthy as we think, providing the means to manipulate people, or else devaluing activities that are better off not being games? The truth, of course, lies somewhere in between, and this video (a graduation project from Bezaleal Academy of Arts) captures both sides of the debate in a technically impressive and entertaining way.

A short sci-fi film, Sight illustrates how advances in augmented reality technology could make for amazing gamified experiences, but also how there may be more than a few downsides to the technology. Check it out (and make sure to watch all the way to the rather disconcerting ending); it's very much worth the eight minutes of your time.
